Wow, where do I start.. I feel like this will be me pretty much every week, but it's great!
Really cool thing: It's really hard to be here and not have your faith and testimony grow in some way. It's incredible. Especially when we have a study of gospel topics in our Polish class. Everything is gospel centered here, even learning the language. It's so great though because we are learning so much about the gospel, right along with studying the language. And it's perfect because it should be centered around Jesus Christ since that's what our entire church is centered around. Siostra Emett and I did the math and we actually have about 10 HOURS of scheduled study time a day. 10 HOURS PEOPLE!!! Still don't know how that's mentally possible, but we're doing it!!
Something interesting I learned is that in Polish, "Repent Ye" means "Become Converted". I think it's so so cool and true!! Because when we repent, we are turning to Christ and becoming more converted to Him. So I love how that's the literal translation of the phrase from Polish. Another thing is that the Book of Mormon in Polish is put into the simplest words possible so that ANYONE can understand it. I love that too because Heavenly Father wants everyone to have His word and His teachings, so why wouldn't He make it easy to understand?!
Polish is coming, slowly but surely. I feel like I'm understanding more and more every day. In class, we have a motto up on the board. It says "Krok Po Kroku" (croak-po-croak-ooh) and it means, "Step by Step." And this is so important for me to remember that learning a language comes step by step, line upon line, precept upon precept... we all know this, but it's nice to have that reminder.
Okay, I keep thinking that everyone here is older than me... but they’re not!! It’s so weird because they totally seem like it and look like it. I guess that’s what suits do to guys haha. Makes them look older!! Haha, but really, I guess I'm just used to seeing the missionaries and always looking up to them (usually literally because, yes, I am short) and wanting to be like them when I was older. So now, being surrounded by missionaries all the time. I feel super young. But I'm the same age, if not older than many people here. It's just a weird, and GREAT, thing to finally be where you always wanted to be.
So Sunday basically just feels like every other day here!! It's super weird actually. But it's still really great! I love being in a zone with all the European missions!! We get to hear so many different languages in every meeting. So far, we've heard talks in Polish, Dutch, Danish, and Icelandic. (with more to come!!!) One thing that sticks out to me though, is that even if you don't understand the language, the Holy Ghost can still speak to you because there are no barriers that the Holy Ghost can't cross! It doesn't matter if it's Greek, Spanish, Albanian, Russian, Polish, or English... the Holy Ghost will be able to teach you the things you need to know and understand if you are ready to listen.
The Elder who gave a talk in Icelandic was... Elder Bytheway. And yes, he is indeed the legendary, John Bytheway's son! I didn't believe him at first actually, haha, so I kinda messed with him about it. Hmm...maybe that's why he actually wanted to talk to me because I didn't think he was famous? Who knows! But it was fun to chat with him for a bit. But Iceland!! Wow! So that was pretty cześć! XD
Everyone here is getting sick... But don't worry Mom, I haven't!! Thanks to your handy dandy essential oils... I've been able to stay healthy AND help people in my district. Hey, all you doubters out there.. THEY WORK!! ;) XD They all come to me when they need anything haha. OnGuard and Peppermint are crowd favorites. So, our classroom often smells like peppermint and Christmas. It's great!!
I saw Landon Paskett this week! It's fun to run into people here. We got a picture together.
Now.. apparently there's a rule that there can't be just one guy and one girl in a picture? Not sure if that's an official rule or not. Anyway, the Elders in my district were getting on me for it. And saying, "FLORIDA KEYS!!" Oh that's another thing. We have this inside joke that if you break mission rules or get kicked out of your country or something that you get reassigned to a Southern States mission. Apparently all the "disobedient missionaries" go there. And so whenever someone says "Guys" instead of "elders" or "sisters" or they break a small rule, everyone yells, "FLORIDA KEYS!!" Like you're gonna get reassigned to Florida or something haha. That's not even a mission, but oh well, still a fun inside joke!!
I also saw Sister Kelly, a YPM from Nauvoo!! She teaches Albanian here!! Anyway, she knows Chelsie and Jacob Vanderwerken! And Brock Egan (Jacob's best friend and also a YPM)! Apparently she's dating Brock now, so that was a fun conversation to have all these connections! But yeah, random story, but she's cool!
New missionaries came yesterday!! (Wednesday) I am SOOOO glad that I never have to go through that again! The worst is behind me! I only had to say goodbye to my family once in my life! And it’s over! YAYYYY!!!!
In choir on Sunday, they announced that they were going to put together a small Christmas choir of 24 people (6 per part) for the MTC Employee's Christmas lunch, and I was selected!! I was so excited!! (at one point we had about 1,000 missionaries in the MTC choir, so that's awesome.) One song we're singing is the same arrangement of "The First Nowell" as we sang for Cantus last winter. Which is an AMAZING piece!! I'm so excited to sing it again. This will be a super cool experience! So that was super awesome! I feel super blessed with all these opportunities to make my voice heard.. sometimes literally. First, being quoted in that newspaper article and now being in a small choir!! Ahh, it's so fun!
Okay, and.. last night (Wednesday) we had our first TRC (Teaching Resource Center). Basically they bring in members of the church who speak Polish (or another language for everyone else) or who have served their mission there. And we just teach them a lesson. It was good, but just really hard to respond when I only fully understood half of everything they said, and I don’t really know how to form sentences yet.. but I feel like I got the idea of what they were saying. It’s so hard knowing what you want to say, but not having the words to say it! But it'll come!! Slowly.. XD But hey, good news: I feel like, when I’m listening, I'm starting to... well, I understand Polish about as well as I understand German. I took German for 3 years and I’ve only been studying Polish for 2 weeks!! The gift of tongues is real!!!
Soooo.. apparently Polish is like.. in the top...2 hardest languages!! CRAZY!! Finnish is the hardest. And Polish is the 2nd hardest. So THAT'S pretty exciting. I think it might be because of the grammar and different cases and things like that. But I'm sure learning this language will be a huge blessing in my life! And when we put our trust in God, anything is possible!!
Love you all!!
Siostra Shaylin Carroll
P.S. This was our unofficial FHE on Friday. It was Elder Hall’s and Elder Kimball’s birthday this week!! So we had a party because one of their mom sent a cake. 😂
